How long does it take a first class letter to get from Virginia to Knoxville, TN?

It went out Thursday and I am hoping it will show up today. I was told it went out from VA in the AM. I have friend who lives in VA and her stuff gets here in like a day or so, but this letter is really important and I am starting to panic.

When u have a connecting flight in the usa at the next airport do u have to go through security again?

In the USA if u have a flight and u have to connect at other airport when u land can u just go straight from the plane u was on and get right on ur next plane? or do u have to go out and go through security again? Going from knoxville tn to memphis and then to san antiono tx....thanks
