How do we know reason is right?

We all "know" that 2+2=4 and that logic is unassailable and is proof of anything that can be proven with logic. But what is logic? What is reason? Is it anything more than a locally popular intellectual language that we all subscribe to? How do we know it is sound? In any general sense.
