Local Multiplayer-How To Connect To Local Servers?{Terraria}?

Hi, me and my friend are connected to the same IP, and want to start a multiplayer terraria, local to our IP. We just want it for us to connect, so no hamachi, etc. When my friend tried joining by using the IP of the house, it did not work, and we received the "party did not respond" error. How do we play locally, without port forwarding, etc? Help would be greatly appreciated!
